Could Patrick Stewart be returning as Professor Xavier on the big screen? It certainly is looking that way, but which movie could it be?
Speculation of Stewart reprising his role as the leader of the X-Men began popping up when the star reportedly was asked by a fan at an Apple store if he would be appearing in another X-Men movie and Stewart gave a nod. Not much of a confirmation, but now the star is speaking up about the possibility. At a recent Q &A at the Montreal Comic Convention, Stewart was asked if he would be playing Professor X on screen again and he replied, “I think there is every possibility” and then began listing some of the female co-stars he worked with on the films like Halle Berry and Famke Janssen. According to Newsarama, he then began to say, “yes, I’ll be reprising…” when he was then interrupted by his son who began throwing out names like Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellen.
So if Patrick Stewart will return for another X-Men film, what form will the movie take? Some are speculating him listing his co-stars from the previous films suggest a fourth X-Men movie continuing the timeline that ended with X-Men: The Last Stand is the most logical choice. Another option could be seeing Stewart as Xavier in a cameo in next year’s The Wolverine, though we think that is probably the least likely scenario. There is a chance that we could see Stewart in the X-Men: First Class sequel set for July 2014. Keep in mind that the sequel will follow the “Days of Future Past” storyline which involves the X-Men trying to prevent a future where mutants are held in internment camps and Sentinels rule. Since the “present” in the film will most likely be the 1960’s era seen in X-Men: First Class and the future most likely our present day, an appearance of Stewart as an older Professor X seems likely. This could also lead to another modern day X-Men sequel, with a new timeline separate from the original trilogy.
Of course, this is all just speculation and nothing has been confirmed by the studio, but what do you think?
